CBD Effects on the Brain

Nowadays, CBD is available in almost everything from candies, lotions, lattes to cupcakes. CBD sellers are consistent with claiming that this compound offers numerous health benefits such as pain and anxiety relief as well as help in sleep. However, until this time, there is only a few solid evidence that supports those claims.

In fact, authorities have recently made announcements about these trendy drinks and treats. FDA acting commissioner Ned Sharpless says, “Under current law, CBD cannot lawfully be added to food.” He made this announcement on a public hearing about the laws concerning drugs, food, and drinks that contain CBD and other cannabis compounds.

On the other hand, Doctor Russell Zwanka, an author on CBD oil and a Sienna College Food Marketing Researcher, explained in a recent interview about the CBD effects on the brain. According to him, in the Cannabis plant, there are plenty of compounds referred to as “cannabinoids.” CBD is just one among the cannabinoids found in the plant that possesses under 0.3% THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is another compound present in the cannabis plant.

THC and CBD both have impacts on the human body most notably on the brain receptors, which is directly linked with the time perception, coordination, pleasure, memory, and thinking, but works in various means. THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is a substance with psychoactive effects that causes the feeling of “high” while the CBD effects on the brain are not psychoactive.

Does CBD help epilepsy? What do study shows?

Over the years, there are small clinical studies, laboratory studies, and anecdotal reports about the CBD effects on the brain. These studies and researches suggest the potential help of CBD towards epilepsy and seizures. Doing research and studies towards CBD effects on the brain is hard to do because of the strict federal regulations to access cannabidiol. Along with this are the time and financial constraints.

There’s a recent study done showing the benefits of CBD products in treating a group of people with epilepsy and seizures who have not reacted well to traditional medications. When the usual treatments don’t work well and control seizures, then it’s not irrational to think about CBD oil. Still, you should only use CBD oil after a comprehensive assessment at a particular epilepsy center that checks if you have tried all available treatments such as FDA-approved medicines, surgery, dietary therapy, and devices.

The Epilepsy Foundation is urging anyone who’s exploring the best cure for epilepsy, as legalized under the law, to talk and connect to their doctor to come up with the best choices for their care.

Does CBD help multiple sclerosis? An expert explains

Multiple sclerosis or MS is an illness wherein the body’s immune system attacks the central nervous system. Up until now, the specific cause of multiple sclerosis is unknown; however, it could be a result of some environmental and genetic factors.

Doctor Ben Thrower, a general practitioner from the Shepherd Center located in Atlanta, GA, a health institute that focuses on research and therapy for people suffering from severe diseases like multiple sclerosis. He mentioned that most of the MS patients consider full-spectrum CBD merchandise to be the best in treating their pain and spasticity.

“Many of our MS patients have used hemp-based CBD products with 0.3 percent THC or less,” he said.

“For the management of spasticity/spasms or burning pain (central neuropathic pain), I have found that most patients need higher THC concentrations,” Thrower added.

Because THC is known to give pain relief, which could be the reason why products with high-THC levels are very famous for treating multiple sclerosis symptoms. But Thrower also said that some patients find comfort using “low-THC, CBD lotions applied topically.”

When it comes to the adverse side effects, Dr. Thrower said that they’re unusual and very few.

“I have found the side effect profile of these products to be less than some of the prescription medications,” he said.

“CBD/THC products tend to be far less sedating than Baclofen or Tizanidine, which are [muscle relaxants] traditionally used for spasticity,” Thrower mentioned.

While there isn’t any evidence that proves how CBD can treat nerve damage for a long time, further study in that part is ongoing.

Thrower said, “To date, studies have not shown a long term benefit from cannabinoids in MS, but [they] are ongoing.”

Does CBD help Parkinson’s disease? The latest update

Parkinson’s disease is clinically referred to as dyskinesia- loss of movement, bradykinesia- sluggish movements, and dystonia- toughness of the muscles including the face, resting tremor, drooling, deformed posture, urinary and sexual dysfunction, as well as psychiatric indications such as depression, dementia, and psychosis.

The human brain possesses an abundant manifestation of cannabinoid receptors along many areas like the G-protein attached receptor along basal ganglia- the brain’s major part affected by Parkinson’s. The recent studies that assess the ingestion of CBD oil orally and vaping cannabis show positive results in treating Parkinsonian signs and symptoms.

In one observation, when cannabis smoke is inhaled, there is a rapid relief of Parkinsonian symptoms, which includes tremor and bradykinesia. While in separate research, 56% from a small group of patients presented improvement in sleep and mood issues.

Can CBD help with Alzheimer’s disease? What’s the news?

There is also a comprehensive study now on how can CBD help with Alzheimer’s, and the experts discovered that the compound is indeed able and competent in treating nervous system disorders. Its efficacy is from the cannabinoid’s ability to shield nerve cells to prevent further deteriorating and damage and not to mention its abundant antioxidant features.
